AFRO News
The UW Women’s Basketball team told the girls about their experience playing basketball as women. They went through stretching excersises, drills, and the importance of nutritious food. These are all valuable things to learn as a young girl. Thank you to the team for taking their time to come empower our AFRO girls.
Thank you for the KW Titans players for coming out to the Victoria Hills Community center to mentor our Youth Basketball Group. They taught the youth game rules and gave valuable advice. They explained to the boys that “there is always someone watching at these games, so you always have to do your best”. We are so grateful for these experiences, because they show us that dreams do come true and to continue to always work hard.
Colleen James, and her mother, Naomi! On Tuesday our Mother Daughter program participants had the opportunity to hear Ms. James discuss her rise to Regional Council of Kitchener and how her relationship with her mother helped her in her journey. Her advice to the girls was to own who you are, and always get support and connect with your mothers.

To kick off Senior’s Month we celebrated with the City of Kitchener Senior of the Year Award Ceremony. A huge congratulations to Faduma Aden on being nominated for the Senior of the Year! AFRO’s seniors, staff, and volunteers are incredibly proud of you!
Last month our Boy’s Youth Recreation Program was gifted with new basketball shoes! They absolutely loved the surprise and we couldn’t be more proud of our boys for improving their attitudes and helping out their community! They are growing up to be thoughtful and supportive young men who strive to encourage one another.
The week wraps up AFRO's Black Mental Health Campaign. This fall programming consisted of educating the youth on the importance of mental health while also providing them with the skills and tools that can be used to not only gauge their mental health but healthily regulate it as well. Join Afro this coming January as we look to ramp up our mental health programs for our youth end elderly in the winter!
Some staff from AFRO had the privilege to connect with the new Chief of Police - Chief John Goodman, and the WRPS team to discuss strengthening the visible minority through community engagement initiatives. AFRO is excited about the collaborative activities we will share together in the future.
